About Macular Degeneration
As we age, our eyes (much like the rest of our body) undergo changes, and some of these changes can lead to complications over time. Macular degeneration is a progressive eye disease that's most common in senior patients and is even the leading cause of blindness for that age group. This condition affects the macula, the middle portion of the retina that's in charge of our central vision. A person's central vision is the line of sight that helps them read, drive, see color, notice small details, and many other everyday uses. The primary cause of macular degeneration is when the proteins of the retina form clumps (dry type macular degeneration) or when new blood vessels form underneath the macula, which then bleed or leak fluid (wet type macular degeneration). At The Eye Center of Southern Indiana, our Bloomington, IN team provides effective diagnoses and management options for both types of macular degeneration.
Macular Degeneration Symptoms
While dry and wet macular degeneration are both typically a result of aging, the symptoms of both forms vary somewhat. The dry type of macular degeneration is the most common form because it is the first to develop and progresses slowly over time. Even though men and women with the dry form may experience worsened central vision, the majority still have enough seeing ability to perform everyday activities. The most frequently occurring symptoms of dry macular degeneration are:
- Noticing blind spots
- Difficulty with activities, like driving or reading small print
- Having blurry or distorted vision
Wet macular degeneration can develop if the condition is not diagnosed early enough and reversed, making it the more critical of the two. It's important for people with wet type to get a proper diagnosis and prompt care since vision loss can occur over time. The most common symptoms of wet macular degeneration often include:
- Distorted vision
- Difficulty perceiving colors
- Noticing blind spots
